Parish Planting Day

Parish Planting Day!
Saturday, October 23 from 10-1PM
(rain date Oct. 30)
Thanks to the generosity of many, we have 6,700 crocus bulbs to plant for The Thompson Memorial Crocus Lawn in memory of
Diane and Jim Thompson, founder’s of the St. Mary Anne’s Garden Market.
Even if you didn’t purchase bulbs for this activity, we need lots of planters to help plant them around the perimeter of the
church and our historic graves. The bulbs are easy to plant, and it is a nice safe activity for couples and families.

9/11 Commemorations

St Mary Anne’s participated in the “Stepping for Heroes–We will Never Forget” 9/11 remembrance event last Saturday morning at the North East firehouse. Fr. John offered prayers for first responders and a block away, our church bell rang after a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m.

Our church bell rang for a minute at 8:47am to commemorate the time when the first plane hit the World Trade Center. Thanks to bell ringer parishioners Bill Weisel and Charlie Kornsey. Bill is a retired policeman and fireman and Charlie is a retired Philadelphia fireman.

Last Sunday, parishioners continued 9/11 remembrances with special prayers during our worship services.

Music set the somber tone, as parishioners first listened to Joel Alarcon’s beautiful and emotional violin performance of the “Schindler’s List” theme by composer John Williams.

Sandwiches/Desserts for Mission

On Tuesday, August 3, we will provide another meal for the Paris Foundation to distribute to their clients. We need four volunteers to join us and make ten individually wrapped sandwiches and ten individually wrapped desserts, in Ziploc sandwich bags.
The sandwiches can be either turkey and cheese or roast beef and cheese – no mustard or mayo.
You can plan to drop them off on Tuesday at the Parish Center kitchen during St. Mary Anne’s office hours: 9:00 to 12:00.
You can place the sandwiches in the fridge and the desserts on the metal table. Cindy Hoffman and Linda Gibeck will arrive after 2:45 to assemble the meals to deliver to Elkton.

Focus on Crocus

Last year’s efforts to decorate our church yard with spring crocus blossoms and establish the Thompson Memorial Crocus Lawn was a thing of beauty! So, we plan to plant more bulbs in October and continue this lovely parish planting activity.
Remember that every crocus bulb planted multiples and blooms each spring for up to 50 years! With just a few years of bulb planting activity, our churchyard will be a spectacular carpet of beautiful purple blossoms every Lenten season.
If you plan to purchase bulbs for this church activity, we hope that you or a family member can plant them. We will work to find additional planting volunteers on our Parish Planting Day in October, but cannot guarantee it. If physically unable, please let us know so we can determine the number of extra volunteers required.
A bag of 100 bulbs costs $14.00. To order bulbs please send a check to St. Mary Anne’s and indicate “Crocus” in the memo line, or visit our website’s Donate page. Deadline for orders is August 31, 2021.

An Important Dialogue

We encourage you to participate in Sacred Ground, a relevant race dialogue series designed by the national Episcopal Church. This Christian based discussion series provides a safe, inquiring forum for difficult, but respectful and transformative, conversation on issues of race and racism.
The study program includes two Saturday meetings with lunch, and four Wednesday evening meetings in our Parish Hall.
Meeting Dates:
  • Saturday, September 18; 9:30AM-12:30PM with lunch
  • Wednesday, September 29; 7-9 PM
  • Wednesday, October 13; 7-9 PM
  • Wednesday, October 27; 7-9 PM
  • Wednesday, November 10; 7-9 PM
  • Saturday, November 20; 9:30AM-12:30PM
The cost is $25 per person to cover program materials and two lunches. A limited number of scholarships are available upon request.
