Rooted in the past, reaching for the future
Each Sunday during worship, we read or hear stories and lessons from the most famous book in the world, the Bible. It is a book on which we base our faith as Christians but what is it really saying, and what does that mean for us now in 2021? What is the rest of the story?
These questions, and more, are explored each week during Education for Ministry (EfM) at St. Mary Anne’s.
The program encompasses the Old Testament and parts of the Bible that are unfamiliar; the New Testament; St. Paul’s letters (What is Paul trying to say in the Epistles?); Church History (How did we go from the 12 Apostles to the Episcopal Church?); and Ethics (So how does this affect my life?)
Each week we begin in prayer; discuss the suggested readings, reflect on how our tradition both biblical and historical is important for us today, eat wonderful snacks, and enjoy a special community of people.
This year EfM will be a hybrid program with Zoom connections for those who are in other parishes and simultaneous in-person meetings at St. Mary Anne’s Vestry House. EfM at St. Mary Anne’s begins on September 13, 2021 and meets on Monday evenings (6:30-8:30PM).
If you are interested or want more information on the EfM , please feel free to email or call Carol Weisel (weisel1@gmail.com)
The dedicated team who brought us The North Elk Coffee House for 25 seasons is ready to retire. They pray another committed team of parishioners can keep the Coffee House open before pulling the final curtain.
Kudos and much thanks to Rick & Julie Waterhouse, Mac & Sandy Taylor, Doug & Cathy Donley, Nancy & Jim Siglow, Carol & Bill Weisel, Ginny Roney, Agnes Underwood, the late Gail Proctor & her husband Paul Pudlinski, and other parish and community volunteers for their longstanding commitment to this wonderful ministry.
Here is a little bit about this unique music ministry:
The North Elk Coffee House brought live music to our Parish Center on the third Saturday of September, October and November and January thru May. The Coffee House simulated the friendly and intimate style of coffee houses in the 1950’s and 60’s, and seated up to 110 people at small, candlelit tables, with an average audience of between 50 and 80 people. Patrons from the community were entertained by professional guest performers in a variety of styles including, Celtic, Blues, Bluegrass, Jazz, and traditional American folk music. Besides being entertained, the guests enjoyed coffee and homemade sweets.
All proceeds, beyond the cost of running the coffee house, were donated to The Meeting Ground, an organization that supports homeless individuals and families in Cecil County, Maryland. Over $40,000 was donated from this musical ministry’s 25 year effort!
If you are interested in building a new Coffee House team, to keep this ministry “brewing”, please contact Rick Waterhouse at wate6585@zoominternet.net or 410-658-2509 for details. The current team is willing to mentor a new Coffee House team this upcoming season.
